Documentation Platform

A documentation platform is the broadest type of DocOps technology and sits at the heart of a documentation system. Documentation platforms are classified as general-purpose or specialist.

General-purpose and specialist documentation platforms The differences between the two are as follows:

  • General-purpose documentation platforms: these are the platforms that enterprises choose to act as the main entry point for all of their documentation needs. Ideally, enterprises should only have one main, general-purpose documentation platform; however, a poor DocOps strategy, lack of maturity, and conflicting teams’ preferences may lead to the co-existence of various competing ‘main’ platforms.
  • Specialist documentation platforms: these focus on the documentation that is relevant to a specific domain or subject matter. Many specialist documentation platforms are just ‘acting’ ones in the sense that they only provide interactive dashboards rather than the ability to share or export their content assets in a documentation-friendly manner.
